I married my patient knowing she had three days left. After the service, her sister came across the car park with a box and said: “She asked me to give you this only after she was gone.” My name is Matt. I’m thirty. And being a doctor is the only thing I’ve ever wanted. My parents couldn’t do much about the fees, so I studied all week and worked weekends the whole way through. And then I met her. She was eighteen. And she was somehow the funniest person on that ward. Even when the treatment had taken everything out of her, she was at the nurses. And she was at me about my serious face. And she always had another ridiculous story ready when I came in. “Dr Matt. YOU KNOW SMILING’S FREE.” And I’d do my eyes. And she’d laugh. AND THEN WE FOUND OUT IT HAD STOPPED WORKING. And there was nothing else anybody could do. And she didn’t have long. And later she looked at me and said: “I’ve got one last thing I want.” “What’s that?” “I WANT TO MARRY YOU.” And I thought she was having me on. And she did that small smile. “Come on. I’m not turning up in heaven unmarried.” And the next day we had the smallest wedding there has ever been. In that room. I wore a tie instead of the stethoscope. And one of the nurses plaited two rings out of clean bandage. And she had a soft white scarf over her head, like a veil. And her sister brought flowers. AND SHE SMILED THE WHOLE WAY THROUGH IT. And two days later she was gone. And after the service I was standing by my car, still unable to believe any of it had happened. And her sister came over with a small box. “She asked me to give you this only after she was gone.” And I took it. AND MY NAME WAS ON THE LID IN HER HANDWRITING. And when I opened it, the first thing in there stopped me breathing. A sheet of paper. Folded twice. And nine lines, in her writing — which by the end wasn’t good. AND THE FIRST ONE SAID: “IT WASN’T REAL AND I KNEW IT WASN’T.” And she was right. There was no licence. No notice. No registrar. The chaplain did a blessing in a room because a girl of eighteen asked him to. And he said so. Out loud. Twice. AND I WAS STANDING RIGHT THERE WHEN HE SAID IT.
