MY SON BROUGHT HIS NEW BOYFRIEND HOME — THE MOMENT I SAW HIS FACE, I LOCKED HIM IN THE BASEMENT AND CALLED THE POLICE.

He’s helping kids not get hurt.

My son turned the worst day of his young life into a shield for other people.

I have never been prouder of anyone.

As for me — I keep the good dishes out now.

I used to save them for holidays. After that Sunday, I decided that was foolish. You don’t save the good things for someday. You use them for the people you love, now, while you have them.

Tyler brought someone home again this past winter.

A different young man. Gentle, funny, a little shy. He brought Tyler’s favorite cookies for me, unprompted, because Tyler had mentioned once that I liked them. He asked me about my garden and actually listened to the answer.

I watched him the whole evening, the way I’ll watch everyone Tyler ever brings home, because that’s my job and I’m good at it now.

He was good to my son. And good for him.

He passed.

When they left, Tyler hung back at the door for a second, and he grinned at me — that grin, the one I hadn’t seen in a long time and now get to see again.

“Well?” he said. “Do I need to worry about the basement?”

“No basement for that one,” I said. “That one, you can keep.”

He laughed, and hugged me, and for a moment I held my whole heart in my arms in the doorway of the house I’d cleaned for a monster and now got to fill with someone worthy.

They tried to take my son.

A stranger with a stolen name and a practiced smile walked into my kitchen and tried to walk out with my boy’s heart and his money and his future.

He forgot one thing.

Between a con man and a nineteen-year-old’s trusting heart, there is a mother who cleaned the house, made the pot roast, set out the good dishes —

May you like

and never, not for one second, stopped watching the door.

THE END
