“Where is it?”
“I moved most of it into an account Lily can access through a trust.”
I stood so quickly the mattress shifted.
“You did what?”
“You’re the trustee.”
“I don’t have access to any trust.”
“You do. The documents haven’t been delivered yet.”
“Why?”
“Because if this became a financial investigation, I didn’t want our savings tangled up in my business records.”
“You could have told me!”
“I know.”
“You could have told me any of this!”
“I know.”
“You made me think you were trying to leave us with nothing!”
His voice broke.
“I know.”
Silence filled the line.
I pressed a hand over my eyes.
Tears came then.
Not because I forgave him.
I didn’t.
Not because his explanation erased what he had done.
It couldn’t.
But because for months I had been trying to survive one version of my life.
Now someone had opened a door and shown me another.
And I didn’t know which one was true.
Maybe both were.
Maybe Ethan had lied because he thought he was protecting us.
Maybe he had also controlled me because that was who he had become.
Good intentions did not erase bad choices.
Secrets did not become harmless simply because they had reasons.
“Why did you let me believe you were having an affair?” I asked.
His answer was almost a whisper.
“Because I thought anger would make you leave.”
I lowered my hand.
“What?”
“I needed you away from the house.”
I could barely speak.
“So you destroyed our marriage to make me leave?”
“No.”
“Then what would you call it?”
“I thought we could fix us later.”
The words landed softly.
That made them worse.
I looked at Lily.
“You don’t get to decide when another person can survive being broken.”
“I know that now.”
I wiped my face.
A knock sounded at the door.
Three gentle taps.
I froze.
“Elena?” Ethan said.
Another knock.
I crossed the room without answering.
Through the peephole, I saw Daniel.
Relief came first.
Then confusion.
I opened the door with the security latch still fastened.
“Yes?”
Daniel held an envelope.
“Sorry to bother you.”
“What is it?”
“This was delivered downstairs for you.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who delivered it?”
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”
I glanced at the phone in my hand.
Ethan was still on the line.
