“Because my radio went dead.”
The pounding came again.
Then the porch light exploded.
Lorna screamed.
Wendell stepped in front of her and Jaylen.
But Jaylen was looking at the small power box now humming on the table.
The controllers blinked one after another.
Like ants leaving signals.
Like neighbors telling the truth.
The air conditioner suddenly surged, coughed, and spat a cloud of dust.
Every light in the house went black.
Outside, both men cursed.
Then the black sedan’s alarm began screaming.
Its headlights flashed wildly.
The engine revved once by itself, then died.
From somewhere under its hood came the sharp smell of burned wiring.
Jaylen exhaled.
Wendell looked at him in disbelief.
“You disabled their car?”
Jaylen shook his head.
“No, sir.”
The boy’s eyes reflected the blinking red alarm outside.
“I made it think it was broken.”
For one breath, nobody moved.
Then Lorna began to laugh.
It was not joy. Not exactly.
It was the sound of years of fear cracking down the middle.
Wendell turned toward the door as the men outside shouted into useless phones.
For the first time since he arrived in Pine Hollow, Wendell Hayes smiled like a man who had found not just an invention, but a war he was finally willing to fight.
But before he could speak, his laptop chimed from the dark kitchen table.
The screen lit up on backup power.
A new email had arrived from Mara.
Subject: YOU NEED TO SEE THIS BEFORE MORNING.
Attached was a video file.
Wendell clicked play.
The grainy footage showed the Georgia test site four years earlier. Men in hard hats. A battery room. A warning alarm. Caleb Tate standing in front of a control panel, shouting for the test to stop.
Then the camera angle shifted.
A younger Elliot Lawson stepped into frame.
Beside him stood another man.
Wendell leaned closer.
The blood drained from his face.
Because the man standing next to Lawson, watching Caleb Tate beg them to shut the system down, was Wendell’s own younger brother.
And in the video, his brother was smiling.
