Daniel said nothing.
“And the trust prohibits using the assets to guarantee liabilities created by a spouse without written authorization from the trustee.”
Nothing.
“And you don’t have authorization.”
“Rebecca—”
“And your loan application is being reviewed for fraud.”
His breathing stopped.
“What?”
“The forged emails too.”
“Those weren’t forged.”
“Lauren gave them to investigators.”
Silence.
“And the federal bid?”
He whispered:
“What federal bid?”
Now I laughed.
The lie was pathetic.
“Daniel.”
“Rebecca, please.”
“The Army procurement integrity office has your submission.”
“Oh God.”
Those were the first honest words he had spoken.
Then came another.
“I can lose everything.”
I looked at our daughter.
“Yes.”
“You can’t let them do this.”
I felt nothing.
No victory.
No pleasure.
Just clarity.
“I didn’t do anything to you.”
Then I repeated something Grandpa Arthur used to tell me:
“Consequences don’t become cruelty just because they finally arrive.”
I ended the call.
Part Eight — The House
I was discharged three days later.
Gloria drove me home.
But not to the house Daniel had thrown me out of.
I went to a furnished apartment near the base that my attorney had arranged temporarily.
Daniel remained in the house.
For exactly eleven more days.
The house had always been titled in both our names, so I could not simply remove him.
Nor did I try.
Instead, my attorney filed the appropriate motions.
Daniel hired lawyers.
Then better lawyers.
Then more expensive lawyers.
Lawson Strategic Solutions was suspended from the federal bidding process pending investigation.
The private lender withdrew the $4.5 million credit offer.
Two investors pulled out.
The company’s largest customer terminated its contract after learning of the allegations.
Lauren resigned.
She later entered a cooperation agreement and turned over company records.
Daniel blamed everyone.
Lauren.
Me.
The Army.
My grandfather.
His lawyers.
“People are trying to destroy me,” he told mutual friends.
But nobody had forced him to open my mail.
Nobody had forced him to falsify my involvement.
Nobody had forced him to create fake emails.
Nobody had forced him to put my name in a federal procurement proposal.
Nobody had forced him to bring his girlfriend into my hospital room while our daughter slept six feet away.
That had all been Daniel.
Part Nine — Grandpa Arthur’s Real Secret
A month after Clara was born, Rachel invited me to her office.
“There is one final trust document.”
