PArt 2: Stay Awake!” Single Dad Saved Billionaire CEO on Flight

“You were a doctor.”

Ethan looked at her.

It wasn’t phrased as a question.

“No.”

“Nurse?”

“No.”

“Paramedic?”

His eyes moved toward the window.

“Something like that.”

Victoria studied him.

She had spent thirty years reading people.

Investors who wanted something.

Executives hiding mistakes.

Politicians pretending certainty.

Competitors pretending weakness.

Ethan Carter was different.

He wasn’t hiding because he wanted leverage.

He was hiding because the thing behind the door hurt.

“What happened?” she asked.

His expression hardened.

“Your heart stopped. That’s what happened.”

“I meant to you.”

Silence.

Victoria understood.

Boundary reached.

She let it go.

For now.

—

The emergency landing was rough enough to wake half the cabin.

Paramedics boarded immediately.

Ethan gave the lead medic a concise handoff.

“Female, approximately early fifties, reported recent arrhythmia diagnosis. Became unresponsive and pulseless approximately thirty minutes ago. CPR initiated immediately.

One AED shock delivered.

Return of spontaneous circulation after subsequent CPR. Pulse remained rapid but present afterward. Oxygen administered.”

The medic stared at him.

“You medical?”

Ethan hesitated.

“Former.”

“Former what?”

Ethan stepped aside.

“You have what you need.”

The medic watched him for another second before focusing on Victoria.

They lifted her onto a stretcher.

Just before they rolled her away, Victoria reached out.

“Wait.”

The paramedics stopped.

She searched the cabin.

“Ethan.”

He was already moving backward toward economy.

“Ethan Carter.”

He stopped.

Victoria extended her hand.

He approached reluctantly.

She caught his wrist.

“Tell me what I owe you.”

A few passengers looked over.

Ethan frowned.

“Nothing.”

“Everyone wants something.”

“Then tonight you met someone who doesn’t.”

“I can pay you.”

“No.”

“A job?”

“No.”

“Anything.”

Ethan looked at her for several seconds.

Then his gaze moved past Victoria toward Mia.

His daughter sat clutching Captain with both arms.

Something changed in Ethan’s expression.

“There is one thing.”

Victoria waited.

Ethan leaned closer.

“Go home.”

She blinked.

“What?”

“You almost died alone on an airplane going to another meeting.”

Victoria’s fingers loosened around his wrist.
