PArt 2: Stay Awake!” Single Dad Saved Billionaire CEO on Flight

Victoria already knew.

“Hale Dynamics,” she whispered.

“Yes.”

Victoria stared at the wall.

“What happened?”

“Patient died during transport. There were allegations of equipment malfunction. Carter reported the equipment.”

“And?”

“The company disputed his account.”

Victoria swallowed.

“Who was the patient?”

Lauren’s voice softened.

“His wife.”

Victoria stopped breathing.

For a moment the monitor beside her accelerated.

A nurse looked through the glass.

Victoria lifted one hand to indicate she was fine.

She wasn’t.

“His wife was the patient?”

“Yes.”

“And he was blamed?”

“Officially, the inquiry said procedural errors couldn’t be excluded.”

“Who authorized the company response?”

“That’s what concerns me.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

“Say it.”

“The archived legal file contains an executive authorization.”

“Whose?”

Lauren took a breath.

“Yours.”

Victoria’s eyes opened.

“No.”

“I’m looking at it.”

“That’s impossible.”

“Your signature is on the document.”

Victoria’s hand tightened around the phone.

“What document?”

“A directive authorizing Hale Dynamics to contest Carter’s testimony, protect proprietary engineering records, and pursue enforcement of confidentiality provisions.”

Victoria felt sick.

“I’ve never heard his name.”

“The signature is yours.”

“I would remember.”

“Would you?”

The question hurt because Lauren knew the answer.

Eleven years earlier, Hale Dynamics had been

exploding in size.

Victoria had signed hundreds of documents every month.

Legal settlements.

Regulatory filings.

Acquisitions.

Internal investigations.

She had trusted executives beneath her to summarize what mattered.

How many lives had been reduced to three lines on a briefing sheet?

“How bad was it for him?” Victoria asked.

Lauren hesitated.

“Very.”

“Tell me.”

“His medical privileges were suspended during the investigation. He spent nearly everything fighting the case. His wife’s family sued.

The case became public locally. He eventually surrendered his license voluntarily.”

Victoria stared down at her hands.

Yesterday those hands had been lifeless.

Ethan Carter had put breath back into her lungs.

And eleven years earlier, her signature may have helped take his entire life apart.

“Where is he now?”

“Wisconsin. Small town outside Madison. He works maintenance at
