Can sleeping without removing makeup cause problems?
Going to bed regularly without removing cosmetic products from the eyes can promote irritation and the accumulation of residue around the eyelashes.
Makeup can mix with natural oils, skin cells, and other particles.
That’s why proper hygiene of the eye area can help reduce some eyelid-related problems.
This does not mean that sleeping one night with makeup on will automatically cause a mite infestation.
What happens during the night?
During sleep our eyes remain closed for several hours and blinking decreases.
The eyelids and tear film continue to play important roles in protecting the ocular surface.
The natural presence of microorganisms and microscopic mites is part of the skin’s ecosystem, although an imbalance can cause certain discomforts.
Sharing makeup is also not recommended.
Products such as mascara, eyeliners and other cosmetics that come into direct contact with the eyes are personal use items.
While we sleep, our skin comes into contact with the sheets and especially the pillow for several hours.
Fat, sweat, dead cells, and cosmetic residue can accumulate in tissues.
For this reason, it is advisable to wash bedding regularly, particularly pillowcases.
This is part of good general hygiene, although it does not mean that a pillow used for a few days will automatically cause eye disease.
Does sleeping with pets cause these mites?
This is another claim that often appears alongside similar photographs.
Demodex mites associated with humans are adapted to living on people. It would be incorrect to say that sleeping next to a dog or cat automatically causes an infestation of these mites on your eyelashes.
Even so, people with allergies may experience eye symptoms when exposed to dander, hair, or other animal allergens.
