A story of mystery, betrayal, and an unexpected loyalty that proves appearances can deceive.
At 74, George Miller thought he had found a second chance to be happy.
After nearly five decades of marriage and eight years of solitude after the death of his first wife, he believed that Lauren had come to life to return to him what he had lost: companionship, affection and a reason to smile again.
But what started as a love story ended up becoming a nightmare.
And the person who finally decided to warn him was none of his children.
It was Emily, the humble housekeeper his wife treated with contempt.
A new opportunity after loneliness
George was 74 when he met Lauren, a 36-year-old woman.
The age difference prompted comments from the start.
Her children were worried.
“Dad, you barely know her,” Sarah had warned her.
Mike was even more direct and decided not to attend the wedding.
But George was convinced that his children were just afraid to see him start a new life.
For the first few months, Lauren seemed to show her that she was right.
He accompanied him to restaurants, traveled with him and filled with laughter that huge house that for years had remained silent.
George was young again.
Until Lauren started to change.
First it was seemingly innocent comments.
Then came the humiliations.
And finally, George began to feel like a stranger inside his own home.
Emily had seen it all
Emily had been working at the house for a long time.
He was discreet, responsible and never got into family affairs.
Even though Lauren constantly treated her badly, Emily continued to work because she needed to help her mother financially.
That night, however, something had changed.
It was almost eleven when he knocked on the door of the studio.
George looked up.
Emily came in with a pale face and carefully closed the door.
“Mr. George, I have to tell you something.
What is it?
The young woman took a deep breath.
“I was cleaning the hallway last night and I heard Mrs. Lauren talking on the phone.
George frowned.
“And what did he say?”
Emily swallowed saliva.
“He was talking about you.
George felt a strange chill.
“What exactly did he say?”
Emily lowered her voice.
“He said you won’t get to see the next birthday.
The silence filled the room.
George stood still.
“Are you sure?”
