“Mom,” she said gently, “you know things are going to change.”
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
She hesitated.
Then my son answered.
“It means you shouldn’t be living here alone.”
There it was.
The first real crack in the conversation.
“You think I should leave my house?”
“It’s not about leaving your house,” my son said.
“It sounds exactly like that.”
He sighed.
“We’re just trying to make the responsible decision.”
Responsible.
That word can sound very different depending on who’s using it.
They Had Already Chosen a Place for Me
The following morning, my daughter showed up with a suitcase.
It wasn’t mine.
I stared at it.
“What’s that?”
“We packed a few things for you.”
I almost laughed.
“A few things?”
“You won’t need everything.”
“Where am I going?”
My son walked in behind her.
“We found a place that might be good for you.”
