I gave my last $10 to a homeless man in 1998

“Ms. Reyes, Samuel left the bulk of his personal estate to you and your daughters. After the charitable bequests, it comes to a little over eleven million dollars. Mia’s medical debt, in its entirety, has already been paid, as of yesterday morning. He left instructions that it be cleared before you ever read his letter, so that you would never again open an envelope in this office with your stomach in your throat.”

The overdue notice was still sitting on my desk, next to a ten-dollar bill from 1998.

I looked at the two of them, side by side, and I could not speak.

Eleven million dollars.

The number meant nothing to me.

I had spent twenty-seven years thinking in tens and twenties, in bus fares and bread, in how many days until the check cleared.

I did not know how to hold a number like that.

What broke me was not the eleven million.
