MY 14-YEAR-OLD SON GREW HIS HAIR FOR 18 MONTHS TO MAKE A WIG FOR HIS BEST FRIEND WITH CAN.CER. NEXT DAY, HER FATHER WAS WAITING IN THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE.

My knees were shaking.

I told my patient I was so sorry. I left her sitting in the chair with a paper bib on.

I had no idea what was going on. But ten minutes later, I was pulling into the visitors’ lot.

When I walked into the principal’s office, Wyatt was sitting in a chair by the window.

He was pale. Paper white. His hands were clenched between his knees.

Graham Quinn was sitting in the chair right next to him.

Not across the room. Right next to him.

Mr. Burke stood behind his desk looking like a man who wished he were somewhere else.

I smiled awkwardly.

“So… what’s going on? Is this about the wig or something?”

Graham stared at me for a long moment.

Then he looked at Wyatt.

“You really didn’t tell her?”

My smile disappeared.

“Tell me what?”

Graham looked at me. His eyes were red. Not angry red. Something else.
