MY 14-YEAR-OLD SON GREW HIS HAIR FOR 18 MONTHS TO MAKE A WIG FOR HIS BEST FRIEND WITH CAN.CER. NEXT DAY, HER FATHER WAS WAITING IN THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE.

“How did you find out?” I asked Graham.

He was holding his phone in both hands.

“The trial coordinator called my real number yesterday afternoon,” he said. “The one in Harper’s medical records. A woman named Teresa Reyes. She wanted to confirm the screening appointment. She thanked me for all my emails. She said she’d never had a parent send such organized records.” He laughed, but it wasn’t a laugh. “I didn’t know what she was talking about. She read me one. It was signed Graham. With a little line underneath about how much I love my daughter.”

His voice broke on the last word.

“Then my wife saw the fundraiser,” he said. “A woman from her church sent it to her. With Harper’s picture on it. From her hospital bed. Bald. With your son next to her.”

“I’m so sorry,” I said. “I had no idea. I swear to you. I’ll take it down today. We’ll give back every penny.”
