his eyes.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
Emily was silent for a moment.
Then she asked my mother, “How much do you owe on the house?”
My mother looked confused.
“What?”
“The amount needed to stop the foreclosure.”
I turned toward Emily.
“What are you doing?”
She looked at me.
“The same thing I would hope someone would do for us if we were desperate.”
My father shook his head.
“No. We didn’t come here expecting that.”
Emily stood again and walked toward the small desk near the living room.
She returned carrying an envelope.
Then she placed it on the table.
My mother opened it.
Her hands began trembling.
Inside was a copy of a payment confirmation.
The overdue mortgage amount had already been paid.
My father stared at the paper.
Then at Emily.
“I don’t understand.”
