“What is this?” Wendell asked.
Jaylen moved closer.
“That one doesn’t work right yet.”
“What is it supposed to do?”
“Balance power.”
Wendell looked at him.
Jaylen swallowed.
“Mama’s medicine has to stay cool. When our power gets cut, I use ice from Mrs. Bell’s freezer, but sometimes that melts. So I tried making a small power box that could take charge from anything. Solar panel, car battery, hand crank, whatever. But the problem is different batteries don’t share right. One gets too hot, one drains too fast, one lies about how much it has left.”
Wendell felt the room become very still.
Jaylen picked up a piece of cardboard covered in pencil marks.
“So I made little controllers that talk simple. Not with Wi-Fi. More like pulses. Each part only knows its neighbor. If one gets weak, the others go around it. If one overheats, it gets ignored until it cools. Like ants.”
