Part 2: My aunt wanted to adopt my little sister after our parents d*ed just to get her hands on the money — she had no idea I had one more card to play.

317.

“What does it open?”

“A safe-deposit box.”

“Where?”

“First Federal Bank.”

I looked toward Vicky’s bedroom.

“What is inside?”

“I don’t know.”

I stared at him.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“Yes.”

“After today?”

His jaw tightened.

“Especially after today.”

I turned the key between my fingers.

“Why didn’t you give me this before?”

“Your father gave me specific instructions. I was to release it only under one of three circumstances.”

“What circumstances?”

“If someone contested custody of Victoria.”

My blood chilled.

“That’s one.”

“If someone attempted to dissolve the trust.”

“Two.”

Daniel paused.

“Or if your parents died under suspicious circumstances.”

I stopped breathing.

“They knew.”

“They were afraid.”

“Of Howard?”

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Your father never gave me a name.”

“Then who was he afraid of?”

“I don’t know.”

His answer came too smoothly.

Something inside me tightened.

Before I could question him further, Vicky appeared in the hallway.
