Howard grabbed her arm.
The bailiff seized him.
“Take your hands off her.”
Everything happened at once.
Denise began crying.
Howard shouted that she was lying.
Their attorney demanded a recess.
Vicky screamed my name from behind me.
And I just sat there.
Frozen.
My father had threatened to change the trust.
Howard had been outside our house.
Thirty-nine minutes before it burned.
Suddenly the accident that had destroyed my family didn’t feel like an accident anymore.
The judge slammed his gavel.
“Enough!”
The sound echoed through the courtroom.
“Mr. Parker, sit down immediately.”
Howard obeyed.
Barely.
The judge looked toward Denise.
“Mrs. Parker, you will make no further statements until you have consulted counsel.”
Then he turned toward Daniel.
“Mr. Reed, where did you obtain this evidence?”
Daniel stood.
“From materials recovered after the deaths of Robert and Caroline Mitchell.”
My pulse jumped.
Recovered by whom?
From where?
Daniel continued.
