Part 2: My aunt wanted to adopt my little sister after our parents d*ed just to get her hands on the money — she had no idea I had one more card to play.

“The what?”

“There’s another sealed document.”

I closed my eyes.

“Please tell me nobody else is secretly related to me.”

Mercer actually laughed.

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Your parents created two separate trusts.”

“I know. One for Vicky.”

“No.”

He paused.

“One for each of you.”

I stood.

“What?”

“Howard assumed the estate belonged almost entirely to Victoria because she’s the biological child.”

“Okay.”

“He was wrong.”

My pulse accelerated.

“How wrong?”

“Very.”

“Mercer.”

“Your parents divided everything equally.”

I couldn’t speak.

He continued.

“And because you’re legally an adult, your trust became yours the moment they died.“

I stared at the wall.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Denise and Howard were never fighting you for control of all the money.”

He paused.

“Half of it was already yours.”

“How much?”

Mercer told me.

I sat down.

Vicky looked over.

“Are you sick?”

I couldn’t answer.

Between the estate, insurance, property, and investments, my share was worth more than three million dollars.
