The fire destroyed the device.
But not the files.
For months, investigators believed the account had stopped syncing several days before the fire.
Then a digital forensic specialist discovered a secondary archive.
The last video began at 12:02 a.m.
Howard entered the office.
Alone.
Dad was standing beside the desk.
Mom was near the staircase.
There was no audio for the first few seconds.
Then the microphone activated.
Dad said:
“You had your chance.”
Howard answered:
“So did you.”
He poured solvent across the papers.
Mom screamed.
Dad rushed him.
Howard pushed him down.
Then he lit a match.
There it was.
Eleven seconds.
Eleven seconds that ended every lie.
Howard stared at the footage in the prosecutor’s office and asked for a plea agreement twenty minutes later.
He would spend the rest of his life in prison.
But that wasn’t why Vicky and I were back in court.
We were there for the guardianship ruling.
