Part 2: My son h.i.t me 30 times in front of his wife… so the next morning, while he sat in his office, I sold the house he thought was his.

“But Gloria, that’s not the worst part.”

I gripped the phone.

“What is?”

She swallowed.

“The six million wasn’t supposed to go to Ashcroft.”

My stomach tightened.

“Then where?”

Her voice trembled.

“Daniel was supposed to transfer it into a protected account for me.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Why?”

Eleanor hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Because he promised to help me recover what Malcolm stole.”

I stared at the wall.

Malcolm.

Daniel.

Trevor.

Kristen.

And my own sister.

Everyone had been telling a different story.

Everyone had a reason to lie.

Then Eleanor said something that made my blood run cold.

“Gloria, you need to get out of your house.”

My heart pounded.

“Why?”

Her voice broke.

“Because Daniel knows you’ve seen the bank footage.”

I looked toward the front window.

A black car had stopped outside.

Then Eleanor whispered:

“And he’s not coming to ask you questions.”

The call disconnected.

***

I immediately contacted Detective Grant.
