“Has Gloria seemed forgetful lately?”
Ana said no.
Kristen laughed.
“You’re loyal.”
Ana told me:
“That was when I knew something was wrong.”
She reported it to Martin.
My chest tightened.
“What did Martin say?”
“That Trevor was doing succession planning with your knowledge.”
I closed my eyes.
Again.
One lie inside another.
Ana did not believe him entirely.
So she began preserving what she was legally allowed to preserve as part of her job.
Access logs.
Document versions.
Internal approval chains.
She did not hack anyone.
Did not break passwords.
She simply kept copies of company records that appeared altered.
And because she knew my habits better than any forensic analyst, she noticed things technology missed.
The forged signatures were good.
The language wasn’t.
One transfer authorization said:
“Pursuant to strategic family continuity.”
Ana laughed when she showed it to me.
“You’ve never said ‘strategic family continuity’ in your life.”
