My answer:
“No.”
Daniel nodded.
“Anything else?”
“Yes.”
“Tell them his cooperation can be considered by prosecutors.”
“But my face is not a bargaining chip.”
Daniel almost smiled.
“Understood.”
The next morning, I received a handwritten letter from Trevor.
I did not open it.
Not yet.
I put it in a drawer.
For thirty years, every time my son wanted something, I rushed to respond.
Money.
Advice.
A job reference.
A down payment.
A second chance.
He could wait.
CHAPTER 6 — TREVOR FOUND OUT KRISTEN PLANNED TO LEAVE HIM AFTER THEY TOOK MY COMPANY. HIS FIRST QUESTION TOLD ME HE STILL HADN’T CHANGED
Three months later, I read Trevor’s letter.
It began:
Mom,
Kristen lied to me.
I stopped.
Not:
I hurt you.
Not:
I stole from you.
Kristen lied to me.
I almost put it down.
Then kept reading.
I thought we were securing what would eventually be mine anyway.
