“What if I want a horse?”
“No.”
“What if it’s an educational horse?”
Calvin laughed.
Melissa looked thoughtful.
“She makes a compelling argument.”
“You’re both banned from financial decisions.”
Outside, we walked toward the market.
Ava ran ahead with Calvin.
Melissa stayed beside me.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For following him.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“No?”
“I followed Calvin because Ava told me to.”
“Then thank Ava.”
“I already have.”
We reached the oak tree behind Grant Family Market.
A new rope hung from one of its strongest branches.
Calvin and I had installed a wooden swing the previous weekend.
Ava ran toward it.
“Push me!”
Calvin started pushing.
Melissa watched for a moment.
Then Ava called, “Mom, you too.”
Melissa stepped behind the swing beside Calvin.
Together they pushed gently.
Ava’s laughter carried across the quiet January morning.
I stood beneath the old oak tree remembering another little girl on another swing nearly thirty years earlier.
