They Thought the Lake House Was Their Prize. They Never Read the Clause That Made It Their Prison.215

“The microfilm.”

“Yes.”

“Then what?”

“Cordelia begged her to destroy it.”

Henry stared.

“And when she refused?”

Rebecca looked at Cordelia.

“They arranged an accident.”

A murmur went through the guests.

I felt suddenly sick.

“My grandmother died in a car crash.”

Rebecca nodded.

“On a mountain road.”

I knew the story.

Brake failure.

Rain.

A ravine.

Grandfather rarely spoke about it.

“My grandmother was murdered?”

Rebecca’s eyes filled.

“She was supposed to be.”

I frowned.

“Supposed to be?”

Cordelia lunged.

It happened so quickly that several people screamed.

She grabbed a champagne bottle from a table and swung it toward Rebecca.

An investigator caught her arm.

The bottle shattered on stone.

Flynn stood.

“Mother!”

Cordelia fought violently.

“Let me go!”

That was when Rebecca said the sentence that changed everything.

“Eleanor wasn’t driving.”

Cordelia stopped struggling.

So did I.

Rebecca’s voice dropped.

“I was.”

The garden became completely still.
