They Thought the Lake House Was Their Prize. They Never Read the Clause That Made It Their Prison.215

“No.”

I looked at Phoebe.

“Tell me she’s lying.”

Phoebe’s silence was worse than any answer.

“Where is my grandmother?”

Rebecca looked toward the house.

Then at the rose garden.

And suddenly I understood why Grandfather had never allowed anyone to excavate it.

Why the garden had legal protection.

Why Flynn’s bulldozer mattered.

“No,” I whispered.

Rebecca’s face broke.

Cordelia screamed.

“No!”

Everyone turned.

She was staring toward the rose garden.

Not at us.

At the bulldozer.

Flynn followed her gaze.

“Mother?”

Cordelia began shaking.

“No one was supposed to dig there.”

My heart stopped.

Phoebe stepped forward.

“What did you say?”

Cordelia realized too late.

Rebecca closed her eyes.

“Oh God.”

I couldn’t move.

“What is under the garden?”

Cordelia said nothing.

Flynn grabbed her shoulders.

“WHAT IS UNDER THE GARDEN?”

She slapped his hands away.

“Nothing!”

Rebecca walked closer.

“You always were terrible under pressure.”
