Vatican confirmed bad news about Pope Leo XIV… See more

The News That Raised Concerns Around the World

On October 13, 2026, Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, where doctors had identified a suspicious growth.

Medical examinations subsequently confirmed that the growth was a lung adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer that develops in glandular cells and is among the most common forms of lung cancer.

The diagnosis was undoubtedly concerning. Cancer is a serious illness, and surgery involving part of a lung is a significant medical procedure, especially for someone whose daily responsibilities include public appearances, international travel, and long working hours.

Nevertheless, the Vatican’s medical updates provided important details that helped clarify the situation.

The surgery was reported to have been successful, without complications. Further testing of the removed tissue confirmed that the disease was localized, and an oncological assessment concluded that no additional cancer treatment was necessary.

These findings are encouraging, although they do not mean that continued medical monitoring and postoperative recovery are unnecessary.
