After My Husband’s Funeral, My Son Left Me on a Dirt Road — He Had No Idea What I Had Already Put in Place

My attorney met me first.

We reviewed the documents.

Then we went over the estate arrangements.

The situation was more complicated than my son had imagined.

The house wasn’t simply his.

The business wasn’t simply his.

And my future certainly wasn’t his to decide.

My attorney made several calls.

Some financial accounts were placed under additional protection while the estate was being settled.

Certain business decisions were temporarily restricted until ownership could be properly established.

And most importantly, I had somewhere safe to stay.

I was no longer standing on a country road wondering what would happen next.

I was making decisions.

Then My Son Called

The first call came three days later.

I recognized his number.

I almost didn’t answer.

Finally, I did.

“Mom?”

His voice sounded different.

Less confident.

“Yes.”

“Where are you?”

“Safe.”

There was a long silence.

“Who picked you up?”

“Someone who cares about me.”
