He swallowed.
“Mom, we need to talk.”
“We do.”
“I didn’t mean for things to go this far.”
I looked out the window.
“Yes, you did.”
Another silence.
Then he said, “We thought you weren’t capable of handling everything.”
I closed my eyes.
“You never asked.”
“We were trying to help.”
“No,” I said quietly. “You were trying to take control.”
He didn’t respond.
Because sometimes the truth doesn’t require an argument.
My Daughter Came Next
My daughter called that evening.
She cried.
She apologized.
She said she had been afraid of her brother.
She said she hadn’t known how far he intended to go.
I listened.
I didn’t interrupt.
Then she said something I’ll never forget.
“Mom, I thought you had nothing.”
I smiled sadly.
“That’s exactly what your father and I wanted you to think.”
She went quiet.
“Why?”
“Because we wanted you to build your own life.”
