“She said she was going to di.e and nobody would tell her,” Wyatt said. “She said that, Mom. She was fourteen and she said that to me on FaceTime at one in the morning.”
So he went looking.
Every night. On ClinicalTrials.gov. On medical message boards for parents. On the websites of every children’s hospital in the country. He read study after study he didn’t understand. He looked up every word.
“CAR-T,” he said. “Have you heard of it?”
I shook my head.
“They take your own white blo.od cells out,” he said. “They send them to a lab and reprogram them to hunt the can.cer. Then they put them back in you. Like teaching your own body to fight.” He looked at Graham. “There’s a trial at Lindwood Children’s in Philadelphia. A new kind. For kids whose leukemia came back and chemo stopped working. Kids exactly like Harper.”
