I almost laughed.
“You threw me out of the house.”
“Because you were shutting me out!”
“I was in labor.”
“I wasn’t thinking!”
“You were thinking clearly enough to bring Lauren to my hospital room wearing a ring.”
“That was a mistake.”
“No. The mistake happened months earlier when you decided my name belonged to you.”
He became quiet.
Then his voice softened again.
“Okay.”
I recognized the tactic.
“Okay. I messed up. But we’re married. We can fix this.”
“We’re getting divorced.”
“No.”
It came out immediately.
Almost angry.
“You’re emotional.”
“Daniel.”
“I mean—you just had a baby. We shouldn’t make permanent decisions.”
“You made several permanent decisions while I was pregnant.”
He breathed heavily into the phone.
Then he said:
“What about the money?”
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
Finally.
The honest question.
“What money?”
“Don’t do that.”
“Say it.”
