“I know.”
I looked toward Henry’s photograph.
“Then tell the investigators everything.”
A pause.
Then Trevor whispered, “Mother, there’s something about Daniel you don’t know.”
My heartbeat quickened.
“What?”
He began trembling.
“He’s the one who told Malcolm how to get rid of you.”
I stopped breathing.
“Get rid of me?”
Trevor swallowed.
“Not kill you.”
His voice broke.
“He said there was a legal way.”
My hands shook.
“What legal way?”
Trevor whispered:
“Make everyone believe you weren’t Gloria Sutter anymore.”
The room went silent.
I couldn’t breathe.
“What does that mean?”
He hesitated.
Then said something that made my blood turn cold.
“Mother, there’s another woman.”
***
I sat completely still.
“Another woman?”
Trevor began crying.
“Daniel said she could help establish that you were confused.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who is she?”
“I don’t know.”
“Trevor.”
“He showed us photographs.”
My heart hammered.
“Photographs of what?”
Trevor swallowed.
“A woman who looked almost exactly like you.”
