Part 2: My son h.i.t me 30 times in front of his wife… so the next morning, while he sat in his office, I sold the house he thought was his.

Then he whispered:

“Yes.”

My heart stopped.

“When?”

“Three weeks ago.”

I closed my eyes.

“Where?”

He swallowed.

“At Daniel’s office.”

I stared at the wall.

Then asked the question I was almost afraid to hear answered.

“Did she look like me?”

Trevor began crying.

“Mother, she looked exactly like you.”

The following morning, Detective Grant showed me security footage from the bank.

The recording was dated the day the first two-million-dollar transfer was authorized.

I watched as a woman entered the bank.

She wore a navy suit.

Silver earrings.

A pearl necklace.

Her hair was styled exactly like mine.

Then she turned toward the camera.

I stopped breathing.

It was my face.

My eyes.

My mouth.

Even the small scar beside my eyebrow.

A scar I’d gotten at fourteen when I fell from a horse.

I stared at the screen.

“No.”

Grant looked at me.

“Do you recognize her?”
